Last Semester I worked on several pieces to show a story.
I was fairly happy with how these came out I really pushed myself to make much wider open pictures that were more dynamic and was not just a focus on a singular character.
However looking back I find that my characters are very lack luster. I feel like they aren't as interesting as I wanted them to be nor are they nearly as detailed as I wanted them. The drawing in a while are not as detailed as I wanted them to be. I found myself spending a lot of time on the original concepts of the characters and drawings. Once I got to the digital painting process it went pretty quickly but I think overall that they (the characters) really lacked strong concepts.
This semester I want to work on being able to create better, more creative and original characters that are memorable. I want to really focus on the concepts, designs, and details, that go into making a character.
Another issue I struggled with last semester was how much time these pieces took. I felt like I put in so many hours and that for me, it does not show. I got hung up in a lot of places trying and then retrying to make things work. I feel like this is partially due to the fact of my drawing characters being just kinda self taught learn as I go instead of having some stronger direct teachings that I have learned.
So this semester I have also purchased several online classes that I will be going through every week actually learning new skills to hopefully make myself a more skilled artist with more technical ability.
In addition to this work I also want to work on weekly pieces that after each week I will be absolutely done with and move on to my next piece. I want to do this because of how hung up I get on creating a "perfectly finished piece" which I feel really limits my growth because I am not creating multiple pieces one after the other rather just focusing on a few ones that eventually I am okay with. I feel like producing a larger amount of work will increase my skill level a lot more than hyper focusing on a few pieces.
My big goals for this semester are:
- to create more interesting/unique and detailed characters
- increase my technical skills through learning with instruction rather just relying on trial & error
- produce more work (at least one a week)
- be able to let a piece be "finished"
- change my outlook on my own artwork and be more confident in it
