Looking Good

This week I sanded, primed, and painted my thesis project and I am so happy with how it came out!

First just like anything with this project it was a learning experience and things were not as simple as I expected them to be. For my Primer I used Killz Oil based furniture primer and one not only was it the most smelliest and strong fumes I've experienced so far, it dried almost plasticy and would not come out of any of my brushes I used with it when I went to wash them and got all over my hands and was quickly becoming a sticky oily mess that would not coming off me or my brushes with an increasing amount of soap, hot water, vicious scrubbing, and panic. Luckily Tom ran to the store and picked up Mineral Spirits a chemical solution that is used to remove / wash it out of brushes. And after doing that for a while I got it all off. It took awhile for it to dry so I had to wait to paint it white, which was a much more relaxing and familiar experience. I love the way it looks!

This week in preparation for painting I have been binging acrylic beach, sand, water , waves, etc. tutorials and speed paints on youtube as well as reading a few articles as well. Even though I have painted plenty times before I haven't ever done a beach scene or anything really like it before. So I figured taking a look at some examples could only help.

Here is a list of links to some of the videos.

I am a bit nervous because painting on the polycarbonate sheet will be very different from a cloth canvas. When I paint on a canvas I use a variety of wet vs. dry brush techniques that will not really work for the poly, because of how long it takes the wet paint to dry... so I can't just simply follow a tutorial or pick up a technique from watching someone do it... it will take a lot of experimenting. But at least I know if I mess up I can just scratch it off :')
