Painting a Road and Longing for that city life

For my painting this week I wanted to focus on getting the road painted. I started by looking on ArtStation for pieces that had qualities I liked in them to use as reference while working on my own painting. I found several different artist that I thought were really cool. My favorite being Eddie Mendoza, a concept artist at Apple. I like that he has both natural/magical fantasy and futuristic/ sci fi fantasy. Here are some of his pieces I really like.

My favorites are the two in the middle, the girl waiting for the train on the overgrown platform and the guy in the city with the white car. Very different moods/looks and I love both. Between a combination of working on this project and all the inspirational art I've been looking at , not being able to travel to Boston in forever thanks to COVID, and the love I had for city living while I was in Tokyo... this nature loving girl has been really longing for those fun and full of life, color, and art city vibes. Too bad living in downtown Worcester doesn't really fit in the practicality of saving money for a house, I'd honestly love to experience living in a city as an adult before it's time to settle down and have a family.

I also saw a lot more concept artists are moving to using 3D to create concept art. I feel like it is probably going towards being the industry standard, it is just so smart and faster. I found this cool process video of freelance artist Jad Saber doing a city scene concept I thought was worth sharing.

With inspiration from those pieces and several artists I set to work on my own non smart painting where I am doing everything by hand. ( Maybe I will work smarter for the city buildings.... but I probably will be crazy and not.) ANYWAY here is my progress shot from this week's work. The first picture is where I am currently at and the second picture is where I had started for this week .

I am happy with the texture I achieved in the road and plan to put more details later on. I also want to erase some of the lines lightly and build them up a bit more to give them texture as well because right now they are just a solid color and read flat. Also building up more definition with the curb and concrete barrier. I am worried my turtles look a little too cool. Originally I was picturing this being darker and cooler, but obviously that isn't the direction I went in. I think it does need to be darker though because I am not quite sure it reads as night time right now. I think much more drastic shadows are needed too.

This past week was a bit of a struggle for me. With personal issues concerning my health, having a cold, and my overall mood. I honestly have just been down more often than not. Among other things, I tried making a change to my Etsy shop and it didn't work out so I was really stressed about it until I fixed it today. All that aside however , this week I created another Concept for my Human Computer Interactions class called Internal Interactions which may be more straight forward than my other ones but I really like it. I think I also made good progress on my painting.
